Harris and Kara

A Families by Adoption story

The "H" Family

Harris and Kara with their baby daughter

We met in 2007 while Harris was stationed at Hill AFB in Utah, and we got married in 2008. In 2009, we moved to Italy (Aviano AFB); and then in 2013, we moved to England (RAF Lakenheath). In 2016, we moved to Shaw AFB in South Carolina and then to Eielson AFB in Alaska.

We tried with doctors’ intervention to get pregnant for about 10 years; and honestly, it just wouldn’t work for us. Kara even ended up getting a job at the base daycare, so she could be around kids. We just knew that we wanted children in our lives. We thought about every possibility on how to have our own family, and we started talking to other agencies and people to make adoption work for us. But nothing was panning out. Either it took way too long for email correspondence, or things just didn’t feel right.

It wasn’t until Kara stumbled across June Bond’s phone number in September of 2019 and called her that things started looking good for us. She was amazing! She came over to our house that weekend and told us exactly who to call and what to do. She said, “We’ll get you a baby this year.”

We had heard about Ray Godwin from a friend, and everything just felt right and was so easy. We met with Ray Godwin in October, and we were matched with a birth mom in February. Everything went so smoothly, which really tells us this was all meant to be. We don’t know how we can ever really thank Ray Godwin for connecting us to our daughter. She was definitely meant to come to our family.
