The decision to adopt transracially - outside of your own ethnicity - brings with it many unique considerations not generally associated with same race adoptions. Couples must be aware of their own feelings about transracial or minority adoptions and be prepared to answer future race-related questions from the adopted child.
For more than 20 years, Attorney Raymond Godwin and his staff have been finding adoptive parents for minority or biracial children. As an adoptive father, Ray has a unique perspective that will help guide you through every step of the adoption journey and help you consider the tough questions often related to a transracial adoption.
If you are a birth mother or a prospective parent considering adoption, we encourage you to contact us by phone, fax or e-mail to arrange an initial consultation.
The Miracle of Minority Adoption
We work hard to coordinate the adoption of minority children. Our work is made somewhat easier by the fact that minority children traditionally outnumber the total number of families seeking to adopt them.
Typically, the majority of children within our state's and country's foster care adoption systems are African American. There is also a growing population of Hispanic children in the foster care system and our law firm is proficient in coordinating Hispanic adoptions. We work with Spanish interpreters when they are needed to translate for either birth parents or adoptive parents and we are sensitive to the unique needs presented by interracial and intercultural adoptions.
We have seen minority children placed in adoptive homes more quickly than other children, such as a Caucasian infant of up to 18 months of age. Whatever your adoption situation, we do our best to provide you with the latest information on the subject and refer you to additional resources that will support your decision to adopt and raise a child with a different ethnicity or culture than your own.
